Northern Thailand feels like a different country from the beach resorts of the south. The pace slows down, the air is cooler (nights below 15°C between December and February), and the culture reflects the old Lanna Kingdom rather than the Ayutthaya-Bangkok mainstream. Two weeks is ideal for a full northern loop.
Chiang Mai — the northern capital
The walled old city measures roughly 1.5 km by 1.5 km and contains over thirty active temples. Start at Wat Phra Singh (the most revered), Wat Chedi Luang (the massive ruined stupa from 1441), and Wat Sri Suphan (the silver temple in Wualai). Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road is a genuine experience — Thai families come out in traditional dress, food stalls line every corner and prices remain reasonable.
Doi Suthep is the mountain temple above the city, reached by songthaew from Chang Puak Gate (60 THB one way, shared). Arrive before 09:00 for cooler weather and fewer crowds. The 306-step Naga staircase leads to a gilded chedi with panoramic views over the entire Chiang Mai valley.
Ethical elephant experiences
Avoid any operator offering elephant riding, painting shows or circus-style performances — these involve early-life abuse (phajaan). Legitimate sanctuaries let elephants roam and interact only if they choose. Recommended operators near Chiang Mai: Elephant Nature Park (founded by Lek Chailert, gold standard, 3,000-6,000 THB per day), Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary in Sukhothai (multi-day only), and Karen Elephant Experience in Mae Wang for a smaller-scale visit.
Cooking classes and craft workshops
Chiang Mai is Thailand's top cooking-class destination. Small group half-day courses cost 800-1,200 THB and typically include a market visit, five dishes and recipes to take home. Recommended schools: Thai Farm Cooking School (organic farm setting), Baan Thai Cookery School (small groups, professional) and Basil Cookery School (English-speaking chefs).
Silver, ceramic and umbrella workshops are concentrated in Bo Sang, San Kamphaeng and Wualai — reachable by songthaew or scooter in under 30 minutes from the old city.
Pai and the mountain loop
From Chiang Mai, the 762-curve mountain road to Pai takes 3-4 hours by minivan (150 THB). Pai itself has grown from a hippie village to a small tourist town, but the surroundings remain spectacular: Pai Canyon at sunset, Tha Pai Hot Springs, and the bamboo bridge (Boon Ko Ku So) over the rice fields.
Continue the loop to Mae Hong Son through Soppong (Cave Lodge is a legendary base for cave exploration) and the fish caves of Tham Pla. This 600 km circuit takes 5-7 days by scooter — do not rent from unlicensed shops and ensure your insurance covers 125cc+ motorbikes.
Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle
Chiang Rai is 3 hours north of Chiang Mai by bus (155 THB, air-con Green Bus). The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat is a contemporary Buddhist masterpiece — closed Monday, 100 THB. Nearby Baan Dam Museum (Black House) by Thawan Duchanee is a darker artistic counterpoint.
Doi Tung (developed by the late King Rama IX's mother) offers gardens, hill tribe crafts and one of Thailand's best coffee plantations. The Mae Fah Luang Foundation shop supports ex-opium farming villages.
The actual Golden Triangle viewpoint at Sop Ruak — where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet — is more historical curiosity than must-see. The nearby Hall of Opium museum is genuinely excellent and takes 2-3 hours.
When to go
November to February: cool, dry, but book accommodation well in advance for December-January (Thai school holidays). Nights in the mountains can drop below 10°C — bring layers.
March-April: hot and often smoky from agricultural burning (haze can reach hazardous PM2.5 levels).
June-October: green rainy season, cheaper prices, spectacular waterfalls but some mountain roads may be closed.
